Three Easy Ways to Avoid the Summer Slide

girl reads to prevent summer slideSummer slide or summer learning loss occurs when students don’t stay academically active over the summer.  On average, students lose two months of grade level equivalency over the summer.

A student struggling with reading risks losing the hard earned progress they achieved during the school year to the summer slide.

Engaging reluctant readers can be challenging. Here are three easy things you can try to help prevent summer slide and make your child’s summer reading time more fun.

1. Let your child choose their own reading material.

Comic books, Sport Illustrated an Early Reader retelling the Disney movie Frozen – whatever.  Research shows kids that chose their own reading material are more likely to read so step aside and let them decide.

2. Visit the public library.

Public libraries typically have summer reading programs for kids and teens and they always have books.  To motivate readers this year, the King County library rewards reading teens with a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy 7.  Now that’s motivation.

3. Be your own book club.

Read the same book as your child and then discuss it.  If your child is social invite friends with their parents to join your club.  If your child is quieter, maybe discuss the book with just the two of you over ice cream.  Book discussion supplies insight into your child’s reading comprehension, their unique point of view, and, you might have fun together.
