Teenage tantrums can be scary for both you and your teen. Staying calm in the face of a teenage tantrum, especially one where your teenager is pushing your buttons in that special way only they can do, challenges even a naturally patient parent.

So how do you stay calm in the face of teenage rage storm?

Parenting Tip: How to Stay Calm When Your Teenager Throws a Tantrum

A great tip for staying calm during a teenage tantrum is to imagine your teen as a toddler and then superimpose their two year-old face over their angry teenage face. Your teen is still your child and even though he or she may look and sound like an adult, they are not an adult. Within that teenage rage is your little boy or girl. Remembering that you both survived the terrible twos will give you the strength you need to withstand the terrible teens and remain calm even during the worst teenage tantrums.

Portrait of Lotte From 0 to 16 Years in 4 1/2 Minutes is a beautiful piece of art that illustrates how quickly childhood passes, and, it’s a great parenting tool to help you visualize your angry teen in a different developmental stage. Play it for yourself when you need to find a calm parenting place, and remember to be kind to yourself. It’s not just your child transitioning from their childhood; it’s your journey too.
