Counting down the Days till summer! Ideas to Keep Kids Busy

Only a few weeks to go until summer break!  Kids and parents are counting down the days till school is out for the summer.  No more packing lunches and hurrying to get to school on time.  We can hardly wait to say goodbye to homework and tests.  Time for sunshine, vacations and relaxation.  Well, at least that is the vision we are all hoping for…. The truth is that kids can get bored very easily on summer break.  Their brains need stimulation.  Here are some low cost fun and educational ideas to keep kids busy this summer:

Kids jumpingVisit some local museums!

  •  The Museum of Flight- Admission is $11.00 for youths and FREE for kids 4 and under.
  •  Seattle Art Museum – Children and teens are FREE the first Thursday of each month.
  •  Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture – On the first Thursday of each month there is FREE admission.
  •  Pacific Science Center – Youth admission is $13.00 and adults $18.00.  Members are FREE.
  •  EMP Museum – Youth tickets are $16.00 and Adult tickets are $18.00 if you buy online.
  •  Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park – FREE to visit the park!
  •  Center for Wooden Boats at South Lake Union – Admission is FREE!

Go to the Movies!

The Regal Summer Movie Express begins on June 24th and runs for 9 consecutive weeks.  Select movies will play on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am for only $1.00!  Here is a link for additional information.  http://www.regmovies.com/Movies/Summer-Movie-Express. Visit the Beaches around the Puget Sound! Take a day trip down to Alki Beach and go beach combing for the day!  Another idea is canoeing……University of Washington offers canoe rentals for $9.00 per hour.  It is fun to canoe around the Seattle Arboretum and see the turtles sunning themselves on the rocks.

Go for a Hike!

There are tons of hiking trails in the Pacific Northwest.  Get the kids outside and explore the woods and learn about nature.

Some more fun summer ideas would be to visit the local zoos for the day, camping in the back yard, go swimming at the pool, have a water fight, set up a lemonade stand, go to camp, etc.  The biggest thing is to try to keep your kids busy so they will continue to learn, but try and keep it fun too!!
