Are Your Child’s Grades Online?

First quarter is ending which got me thinking, “Is it now common practice for school districts to host online grade systems, and if so, how easy is it for a parent to find them?”

To answer this I did an unofficial survey of school district websites in my area.

What I found is most districts had online progress reports.  However, for me there was a big difference in how easy it was find the information.  I felt some school district websites were very parent-friendly, others less so.

For example, I could not find a parent section on the Shoreline School District website let alone information about grades, online or otherwise.  In contrast, the Lake Washington School District website has a parent portal with an FAQ page and an email address where you can send questions.

My favorite feature I saw on a school district websites was the Bellevue School District’s system.  They have posted a legend for the abbreviations used on progress reports.  Standardized abbreviations and a tool to decipher what they mean?  Wow.  What a time saver for their parents.

Below are the public school district websites I visited and information I found about online progress report systems.  Take a peek and see if your child’s school district is there.

Bellevue School District

The Bellevue School District website described a Parent Internet Viewer system.  It stated the district mails PIV passwords and logins.  If your child is in the Bellevue School District and you didn’t receive a login, you should contact the PIV administrator at your child’s school to get one.

Edmonds School District

Edmonds School District has a Family Access Portal.  I found the link to the system in the top menu of the Edmonds School District website.  The site directs you to contact your child’s school for a login and password.

Issaquah School District

Issaquah School District website has a Family Access Portal for junior high and high school families.  It  has policies, expectations, user guides, an FAQ, the ability to report website problems, and back when they were available, MSP scores.  I found this website to have the most thorough information of all the public school district websites I visited.

Note – If you’ve got an elementary age student, don’t bother with the site.  Elementary progress reports are not online.  Contact your child’s school directly to confirm.

Lake Washington School District

Lake Washington School District website had information about their Parent Access Page which includes grades and other information. Directions to access the system are bit more involved than the standard, “contact your child’s school,” but the school district supplied an FAQ page and an email address where you can send your questions.  Reference the Parent Access Page FAQ for complete instructions.

Monroe School District

The first day I went looking for the information, the entire website was down.  Second day I tried, the website came up, and indeed has a Family Access portal.  There is a web form you complete to get a login.  Site states process should take approximately two days.

Northshore School District

Northshore School District has an Online Progress Report system for grades 7-12.  Webpage says to use your Parent Assistant Login.  If you need a login, contact the campus parent coordinator at your child’s school.

Note – If you’ve got an elementary age student – don’t bother with the site.  Elementary progress reports are not online.  Contact your child’s school directly to confirm.

Shoreline School District

I did not find a parent section on the Shoreline School District website.  Weird, since the rest of the district websites had menu item for parents/families to give an idea of where to start looking.  I used the website’s search feature and still didn’t find progress report information, online or otherwise.  I finally did a Google search and found information about online progress reports for specific schools within the district so my guess is you would contact your child’s school to learn what systems are available and how you gain access.

Snohomish School District

Snohomish School District website has a Skyward/Family Access Page which includes grades and other information you need to support your child’s education.  The site directs you to bring photo id to your child’s school to obtain a login.

Are you using an online grade system provided by your child’s school?  Does it have the information you need or is it driving you crazy?  Share any tips, tricks, hints, joys or pains you’ve experienced with your child’s online grade system.
