School Anxiety and Depression

With the new school year nearing some children may be feeling anxious.  The start of school, life changes, or transitions can sometimes trigger school refusal, refusal to attend school due to emotional distress.  According to the Anxiety and Depression Associate of America, anxiety-based school refusal affects 2 to 5% of school age children and typically affects children between the ages of five and six and ten and eleven.  School transitions like moving from elementary school to middle school or middle school to high school can cause a great amount of stress for kids.  Children that suffer from school refusal commonly have average to above-average intelligence.

This stress can lead to physical ailments such as stomachaches, nausea, diarrhea, and headaches.  It can also cause behavioral issues such as oppositional defiance, separation anxiety, tantrums, avoidance and inflexibility.

To help alleviate stress the child’s parents may consider putting together a support network which could include a child psychologist, school counselors, teachers the child trusts, mentor or tutor.  A customized educational program such as an IEP or a 504 Plan could help put measures in place to boost the child’s confidence.

Hiring a mentor/tutor can help the child to feel successful again and ease with the school transition process.  At Brock’s Academy we take great care in choosing a tutor that will be a good personality match with the student.  Our tutors are experienced at helping children build their skills and we believe all children deserve to SOAR and our focus is to keep a student’s joy for learning alive.  If your child is experiencing anxiety about the new school year, be proactive and help put a team in place now to help your child with the transition.  Give Brock’s Academy a call at 425-483-1353 or go to
