As competition for college admission stiffens, more and more parents are turning to tutors to supplement their child’s education.  According to an article in SmartMoney Magazine, “The fastest-growing group of tutoring consumers is high school students, driven by cutthroat competition for college admission.” “We have students making A’s who want A-plusses,” says Christina Lee, owner of a California based tutoring firm.  A good tutor can boost a child’s self-confidence, help build lifelong scholastic skills and gain an edge.

One of the reasons behind America’s tutoring boom was due to the No Child Left Behind policy that was enacted in the United States Congress in 2001.  The NCLB act put increased pressures on schools to ensure students meet the minimum requirements in reading, writing and math, however, the law did not require anything beyond those minimums, and therefore, many gifted children and children with disabilities were left behind.  According to an article in Time Magazine, Are We Failing Our Geniuses, federal funding of gifted education decreased by a third between 2001 and 2006.  Thus, budget cuts nationwide also contributed to the tutoring boom.  The No Child Left Behind Act is currently being revised, and many states have been given waivers to allow them to opt out of the program.  The amended law is not expected to be completed until 2015, at the earliest.

In the meantime, parents have been turning to private tutors to help their children to navigate the nation’s educational system and bolster their learning.  The benefits of one-on-one tutoring helps students gain a thorough understanding of the subject matter.   The tutor can assess the child’s needs and teach specifically to those needs.  A child, who may not be willing to ask questions in the classroom, may be much more inclined to ask their tutor questions.  It has been shown that with additional tutoring support a child’s SAT/ACT scores can rise by up to 100 points.   The “supplemental education” sector has grown to a $5 billion industry; 10 times what is was in 2001, according to Michael Sandler, founder of education-research and consulting firm Eduventures.   The tutoring trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future as parents discover how beneficial individualized education is for their children.
