Autumn is here and for many of us that means the rain has arrived as well. With the rain outside, children spend more of their time indoors, mostly playing video games. But the television doesn’t have to take over! This is an excellent opportunity to do something creative.
Creativity is essential to a child’s development. According to Alison Gopnik, “Through creative experiences children are literally building their brains for life.” Creativity encourages your child to ask questions, to think about problems from different perspectives and to develop a feel for experimenting.
So instead of video games in Autumn, here are some sources for creative projects.
- Kinderart http://www.kinderart.com/seasons/autumn.shtml lists a plethora of creative ideas that range from the simple and quick to the elaborate and involved.
- Kidspot http://www.kidspot.com.au/best-recipes/Kids-cooking+5.htm The quintessential fall activity that many of us remember doing with our own parents is baking in the kitchen.
- BBC Good Food http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/kids-baking list great recipes to either make with your kids or let them try on their own (the Flowerpot Bread is highly recommended!). What ever project your child decides to try, remember to let them do things their own way, even if it means making a mistake. And above all, have fun!
