How to Avoid the Summer Slide!

Summer Reading Clinic

Summertime is approaching quickly!  Children are looking forward to having a break from school and enjoying some playtime.  This sounds great, but in reality the summertime break can cause children to lose some of the educational skills they have learned over the year.  According to the authors of a report from the National Summer Learning Association: “A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year…. It’s common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have been spent on teaching new information and skills.”  Reading is fundamental.  Encourage your children to pick books they love and to read during their break.  Maybe even offer them a reward at the end of the summer for finishing several books.   Here are some more tips to help motivate your child to read:  http://www.rif.org/us/literacy-resources/articles/motivating-kids-to-read.htm.   If it is difficult to get your child to read, maybe sit down and read to them.  Kids love snuggle time with mom and dad and a good book.  You could also consider options like summer school or a Reading Clinic for your child.  Brock’s Academy will be offering a one-on-one in-home Reading Clinic this summer which will help maintain your child’s skills and improve their efficiency.  Click here for more information:  http://brocksacademy.com/services/summer-clinics/.
