End of the School Year Blues

Schoolboy Struggling with Math ProblemsAs the school year winds down and summer break is around the corner, many parents are scrambling to make sure their child has turned in any missing assignments.  Kids are studying for year-end tests and teachers are working to wrap up the final grades. The end of the school year can be difficult, especially when kids are tired and burnt out.  Their motivation is down and they just want school to be over.  When we see our kid’s grades slide, is when parents need to step in and put more effort into helping them manage their homework.

Email your child’s teachers to see what assignments are missing and ask if there are any extra credit opportunities.  If your child is overwhelmed with amount of work needed to get caught up, see if they can work on missing assignments during reading time, so it doesn’t add to their amount of homework.  If you feel they aren’t prepared for a test, request an additional day to study for a test.  Teachers generally want to see their student’s be successful and communicating with them will help alleviate the stress of the child and the parent.

With each grade level, expectations gradually build and children are expected to manage a higher workload.  As kids get older they transition from learning with the help of a teacher, into more independent thinking.  This expectation of independence can be very difficult for a child, especially if they have a learning disability or have trouble with organization.

Summer time is great opportunity for kids to get ahead and prepare for the coming school year.  If your child struggled with reading, writing or specific math concepts this year, consider getting them some extra help this summer.  A good understanding of math is especially important because the concepts build up on themselves.  If you want to get some extra help for your child this summer check out the Brock’s Academy Summer School Clinics.
