Children Benefit from Grandparent’s Involvement in their Lives

Little Girl and Grandparents

With the holidays approaching, now is a great time for grandparents to connect with their grandchildren.  Children of all ages benefit from their grandparent’s involvement in their lives.  Studies have shown grandparents are important in the transmission of values, ideals, and beliefs to grandchildren.  Grandparents also influence the behavior of a child and help them establish a sense of identity.  Children that have daily influence from their grandparents tend to be more social and involved in school.

The holidays are a great time to ask your grandchildren about what they are learning in school.  This gives the child an opportunity to explain, perform or present information about their school projects.  Internet savvy grandparents can also connect with their grandchildren by logging onto their school websites and reading about their classroom curriculum.  Grandparents can also look into volunteering at their grandchild’s school.  Grandparents can also help their grandchildren with homework or just take time to read a book to them.

Some grandparent’s prefer to establish hobbies with their grandchildren, such as going fishing, playing a round of golf or working on a sewing or art project.  These types of projects can teach a child good sportsmanship, consistent practice and good hand eye coordination.  Other ideas are to garden, prepare a meal, bake cookies, and go on an outing together.  Whatever the activity, the child will benefit.

If a family has a child that has been diagnosed with a learning disability, grandparents have a unique opportunity to help.  The best way for a grandparent to help is to learn as much about the diagnosis as possible and offer help, support and respite.  The time grandparents spend with their grandchildren is an investment in their future and will create a legacy for learning.
