Questions to Ask at a Parent-Teacher Conference

Student working with teacherIt is helpful to you and your child’s teacher if you come to your child’s parent/teacher conference prepared.

Here is a list of questions to help you get the information you need to understand your child’s teacher, your child in the context of their class, and this year’s academic expectations.

  1. What is my child expected to learn this year?
  2. How will this be evaluated?
  3. What do you see as my child’s strengths and weakness?
  4. Can you give me some examples of these strengths?
  5. What do you see as my child’s areas in need of growth?
  6. Can you give me examples of these?
  7. What types of standardized test will my child have to take this year?
  8. Are these a requirements by the school district or the state?
  9. How are my child’s test taking skills?
  10. Will you be teaching test taking strategies and skills this year?
  11. Is my child handing in their homework on time?
  12. Are they participating in class activities and discussions?
  13. How are their social skills?
  14. Have you noticed anything unusual you think we/I should know about?
  15. Does my child seem happy?
  16. Has my child missed any classes other than their excused absences?
  17. Generally speaking, do you think my child is working up to their full potential?
  18. What can I do to support my child’s academic progress?
  19. What can I do to support you this year? (volunteer, etc.)
